Hello My Loves,
I am writing this love note a bit earlier this week; it’s Tuesday. I am here in the self-sabotage boat with you.
Today’s title is “What’s stopping you from reaching your goals?” And the past week, I have reached peak procrastination. I am listening to a podcast while I write this. I’ll link it here.
It’s all about noticing your triggers and acknowledging that the distraction is not the reason you’re procrastinating; it’s all internal. For a while, I’ve been in denial, because as a business owner, you naturally get a lot done. However, like anyone else, I feel as though I’ve been doing just enough, and I don’t think I am getting the best use of my time. So I am writing to shake this feeling.
For example, let me talk you through my trigger loop. I scheduled in my planner to write this article last night, but I didn’t. It started with announcing our Instagram Giveaway, which I had to do. Then I was on social media because I had to post; then I saw a bikini I liked; my focused shifted because I am going on holiday next week; I then received a bikini I had ordered in the post and hated it; so I started panic scrolling in the search of a new bikini; I then realised it was 7 pm; whoops, I have to eat; I put on love is blind UK as I ate; by the way, WHAT WAS THAT, had to finish it; and now I am sleepy. Between the trigger loop, I am aimlessly scrolling, and I could've got a lot more done.
So, I have noticed I am distracted, and I realised I am distracted because I am in search of temporary gratification; something that would make me feel good right now. This is the same reason I used to overeat, overspend, and the cause of my current procrastination. Being a business owner/ creative/self-employed can put you in a constant state of worry, you can go months and months without seeing the results of your hard work, and if you let yourself, you can fall into the trap of justifying giving in to things that you perceive as ‘small’ or that you believe you ‘deserve’. I am sharing this with you, and being vulnerable because I believe that without realising, we are all fighting something internal. There is something that is making us so uncomfortable that we are unknowingly sabotaging the blessings we have coming.
Now, how am I solving this? One, I am here, I write. You need to become aware and write it down. Two: Not overestimating my capabilities. This only makes the guilt worse, and the cycle continues; the pile will only get bigger, you just have to chip away at it every day. Three, I am planning better; yes, I have a holiday, so the shopping still needs to get done, but I have scheduled it for Thursday so I have time to doom scroll and turn my room upside down in search of outfits. Lastly, being harsh. You know what’s standing between you and your goals, don’t spend too much time thinking about doing it and just focus on getting to the next step. Forget the huge plans, build on your work brick by brick, small, manageable consistency. I believe in you.
